The Complete Guide To Recording Real Drums In Your Studio. Part 2 - Drum Damping
In this, the second part of this new series James Ivey of production Expert and Dax Liniere of Puzzle Factory Sound Studios talk about the next stage of getting your drums ready for recording, damping or dampening. Starting with the kick or bass drum Dax shows how he likes to use an 80's throw-back the boomerang pillow to control both the batter and resonating head of the drum in one go. They also talk about how this process would work on a more conventional front head as well as James' DrumPort.
Next comes damping the snare drum and Dax demonstrates 3 different ways to control the unwanted ring of a snare drum using O-rings, a Remo Snare Damper and an old leather wallet to achieve very different sounds.
